Mitch and Rebecca are on the right track getting pictures of themselves as a family. They really wanted casual, playful pictures, not necessarily posing for the camera, but we always try to capture both. Now the next thing I recommend is to order prints,  Here are some of my favorites:

Stephanie and Michael set up a timeline for the day and even stuck to it!  This made for ample time for beautiful images.  I highly recommend planning out the basic structure of your day so that you can capture everything you want in your photos. You can sense the fun they brought to their day and the love they shared by the photos.  Check out some of my favorites, below.

The bride, groom and their family and guests danced the night away to the tunes by DJ Mike Scott of Superior Sound Productions.  It was also great teaming up with Albert at Elegant Imagery Video to capture the "moving photos" of the day.

1. Here is a problem that crops up at every wedding - How to put on the boutonniere? Here's the answer!

Kimberly had a beautiful and really unique gown from Arielle Bridal. She got to choose the different parts to the gown, such as which top she liked, which kind of sleeves or no sleeves, etc. and they made it to her taste. I loved the lacy yet sheer sleeves and the sexy yet modest top! Also note the beautiful flowers by Carl Alan Florist.

The hair and makeup for all the women was done by GLOSS Salon Style Bar. They all looked beautiful. 

The men rented their tuxes from Men's Warehouse. They all looked quite dapper.

Another uncommon feature of this wedding was the beautiful ice sculpture. When we took the pictures of the rings they had so many diamonds on them that I thought it would be fun to put them on the ice. Have you ever seen such beautiful rings? 

This is actually a maternity session, and the couple has been married for 2 years, but they were nice enough to be my models and demonstrate this for you.

What to wear for family portraitsWhat to wear for family portraits

I often get asked for advice on what to wear for a family photo session. It's a great question. These photo(s) will be hanging on your walls for years to come, so it is an important decision.

For a lot of years, it was common to see a family all in white shirts and khaki pants, or blue jeans. Now that is viewed as trendy and boring.  I would not wear white because it makes a person appear heavier while darker colors are slimming.  For most people, even thin ones, they prefer to look as slim as possible so I would say avoid wearing white.

What about the idea of everybody matching by wearing the same color shirt, say red or blue, and the same color pants? I advise against it. When people are close together and in the same color it is hard at a quick glance to see where one person ends and the next begins. The optical illusion is to make you look heavier.

Coordination is the answer

What works best is for everybody to be coordinated. Pick a color scheme that you like and that would go well with the wall and room where you are going to hang the picture. For most people, it is neutrals or earth-tones.

Dont's

• Don't wear bold stripes, especially not horizontal

• Don't wear the same exact color shirts 

• Don't wear clothes that are dirty, wrinkled, have holes or don't fit properly.

• Don't wear clothes with words, sayings or pictures. - The exception is if you are all on a sports team or being a fan of a team is a big part of your life.

Do's

• Wear solid colors that compliment each other

• Wear clothes that fit you properly 

• All be on the same level of formality (one person glammed up while the other looking like they are going to do gardening just doesn't look right. You should ALL be casual, or ALL be formal,

• Have a coordinated mix of outfits, like one person with a nice button-down shirt and new jeans or khakis with another in a dress.

The reception was at Talamore Country Club in Ambler PA. The Talamore never looked more beautiful with the table clothes and flower centerpieces all perfectly matching the color scheme of the wedding party. In fact, all the flowers, which were from Willow and Thistles in Blue Bell PA, looked fabulous! Uplighting and monogram and photobooth were supplied by Frank Raffa from Sound Sensation DJ's. They also providied the "Dancing on a Cloud" first dance, it was very romantic. So, here is a little preview of some of their wedding images. Many more to come in a few weeks.

The next week was the reception at the newly renovated Country House at Blue Stone, 711 Boehms Church Rd, Blue Bell PA. We met them early and took formal pictures, then they enjoyed their reception. There were several unique elements at the reception. First, the prints of the wedding ceremony were framed and displayed around the home style rooms and on the baby grand piano. They looked beautiful, if I do say so myself. There is also an outdoor area with a fire pit which the guests enjoyed, especially the cigar smoking men. Inside the music was provided by Unbreakable Entertainment from Warminster PA. During the evening, everybody went outside and watched as Tracey and Jim released a hot air balloon lantern. They also had some cute family wedding traditions, like everybody waving flags and singing "God Bless America" and ending the evening with a human pyramid. It was a really fun wedding with a really nice group of people. Speaking of nice, the staff at Blue Stone Country Club were wonderful and the food was outstanding. I definitely recommend checking them out if you are planning a wedding. Here is their sneak peek:

Located at GPS Coordinates: +40.329932/-74.939177. Now, you know it's rural when the address is GPS coordinates! But actually, it's down the street from downtown New Hope on the PA side. You can book your wedding there. They have a pretty outdoor area with a pond for the ceremony and a large tent for the reception. However, the wedding we did there was not booked like that. We went into the preserve unofficially and parked next to a beautiful stone bridge. The bride and her bridal party entered down a staircase that was wooden steps attached to a hill.  The groom and his men waited on the bridge, where the ceremony took place. It was a beautiful, peaceful setting. A simple and quick ceremony attended only by the bride and groom, their parents and the bridal party. One of the smartest decisions they made was to have a reveal before the wedding, which allowed us to take some time to get images by the pretty pond Bowman's Hill has set up for weddings. That area was booked for another person's wedding at the same time as ours, so going to it before the other people (who officially booked with the preserve) was the only time we would have the opportunity. After the wedding, the reception was in the backyard of the bride and grooms house. They had a large tent. The bar/liquor set up was second to none. The food was out of this world delicious from O'Neil catering! There were many personalized items on display. The table seating assignments were written on an old window. The "sign in book" was a set of wooden stairs. No doubt these special momentos are now found in their house.

Graeme Park Country Wedding

Located at  859 County Line Road Horsham, PA 19044 Tel: 215-343-0965.Graeme Park is a historical landmark in Horsham PA. It featuring the Keith House, the only surviving residence of a Colonial Pennsylvania Governor. The mansion has remained virtually intact since the late 18th century. There are many beautiful areas for pictures, a pond, an old barn, the Keith house, the woods a bridge etc. The wedding we did there recently was great. The day was beautiful to look at but unusually cold for that time of year. The bridal party kept on their shirts over their dresses to help stay warm but were more than willing to stay outside and have fun playing around to allow us to get some great shots of the bride and groom.

One decision they had made that turned out to be perfect was to wear leather boots. They were beautiful, comfortable and practical for walking around on the grass. If you are looking for a beautiful pair of boots try the western cowboy boots from the Texan brand King Ranch. ​​​​​​

The wedding was outside the Keith house and the reception was in a large heated tent on the grounds. The bride and groom filled the tent with personal touches and even spent the year building large wooden games to place outside for their guests to play. They had some very original ideas. One thing I had never seen before is that they had a sapling at the ceremony. Both mothers watered it in the beginning and the bride and groom watered it after the vowels. I'm sure it will make them think of their wedding for many years as it grows.

But first, we started the day at the bride's parents house with all the girls getting ready. Her gown was covered in beautiful lace with a long train. She visited 5 shops before finding the perfect gown at La Bella Moda, 200 Fayette Street, Conshohocken, PA. Tuxedo from  Floccos, 110 Fayette Street, Conshohocken, PA

The flowers were beautiful. The florist was Floral Sampler 515 Germantown Pike, Lafayette Hill, PA.

They had a traditional Catholic wedding at Epiphany of Our Lord Church 3050 Walton Rd.  Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462.  The bubble exit was followed by a super fun Party Bus Ride. Once we arrived at Belle Voir it was one fun and amazing event after another! The during the formal pictures the bride and groom were surprised with a horse and carriage ride, followed immediately by the reception, during which they had a wonderful live band, EBE Sydney. We were also visited by the mummers! How fun is that? This was the first wedding we shot where the cake cutting was done outside while we were treated to a private fireworks display. Not just one or two fireworks either, it lasted about 8 minutes and was spectacular. The whole day ended with a sparkler send off. Whew! What a day. We have well over a thousand pictures to share, but here are just a few to hold you over till the rest are posted. 

Often when I arrive, the girls are still getting their hair and makeup done even though it is supposed to be done before I get there. But these girls made sure to stay on schedule. They had hair and makeup completed except a few finishing touches, which allowed us to have time to get some fun, relaxed images. I also have to give kudos to the hair and makeup artist.  Mickie by Mickie Davis hair studio and make up artist, Brennan from Blushing brides artistry. They started at 7am to be ready by 1:30pm.

Tiffany allowed me to take a few minutes and capture some images in her robe. This took a lot of faith on her part because the limo was waiting and she was determined to stay on schedule. I convinced her I would be fast, and I was. In just a few minutes we took this and some on the bed. The limo was scheduled to pick up the guys at 3:15 after dropping the women off at Talamore. It arrived at exactly 3:15 for the men. Trusting your photographer leaves to beautiful images you will never have a second chance to get.

Mazel Tov, Maria, on becoming a Bat Mitzvah! She did a great job reading and leading the congregation at Beth Chaim during the event. We were not allowed to take photos during the actual event, and Heidi, her mom, did not want us to take pictures of the rehearsal, but Rabbi Michelle Pearlman did a quick run through that morning and we were allowed to photograph that! She even took the Torah out so Maria could have some wonderful pictures! I suspect she did that because Maria and Heidi are unbelievably nice people. The lunch was really good, but the main event of the day was definitely the party at Talamore Country Club! Having shot many weddings at Talamore, I thought I knew everything about it, but, I was wrong. I never realized how they use the grand ballroom during a party like this. During cocktail hour the adults were enjoying refreshments and cocktails out in the patio room, while the teens had the ballroom to themselves, playing games led by the DJ. During dinner the adults had tables downstairs and were served while the kids had the whole upstairs to themselves and had a buffet. It was awesome! They even had their own bar upstairs serving a fun blue drink which matched Maria's dress. (Cleaver way to serve gatorade.)

The DJ and entertainment was provided by Emcee Jesse Cartlidge from Events Beyond Expectation, EBE  They had one emcee to run the games and Sonny the Host to run the dancing. They also show up with some professional dancers to get the party started.

Normandy Farm has many beautiful areas inside and out for wedding photography. The staff was nice as could be.

The brides "ready room" which they called the hospitality room, was well stocked with refreshments and was large and beautiful.

You don't have to spend a lot of money to have a fun wedding. Here are some easy things you can do so everybody will look back on your day with a smile.

1. Start The Ceremony On Time.
Your guests want to celebrate your day with you, not spend the first half hour cooling their heals, getting hungrier and hungrier. Unforeseen things may be the cause, but more likely it's poor planning. Leave gaps of time in your schedule earlier in the day, so if anything goes wrong, you will still be able to start on time. What's an acceptable delay?  5 - 10 minutes.  Things take much longer in reality then they do in your head. Take advantage of the experience we have of going to 20+ weddings a year and let us help you set your timeline.

2. Make up a Seating Arrangement.
It is really a service to your guests to set the seating so people who know each other and/or have a lot in common can sit together. Sitting in awkward silence with strangers- not fun.  Getting stuck next to your ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend, worse wedding ever.

Here's a cute idea for Table Assignment Cards. Put the names and table number in little frames.  When you send out the thank you notes include a wallet size photo from the wedding for your guest to fill the frame you gave them.

2. Props for the Dance Floor.
Photobooth's are fun, but even without one you can put out props. Here are some Anthony & Jennifer gave out. The umbrellas were for when they played the Mummer's Strut song. The crowd really seemed to have fun with them. Inflatable guitars were fun and especially cool because the groom is a musician. (Spoken Life Fan Page)

3. Hire a Great DJ. Want to Supersize the Fun? Get a live singers, like "The Best of Both Worlds Entertainment Group."
Your wedding will be remembered as great for years to come. Dazzling great singers with the fun of live interaction, but you save money by not having to pay a whole live band!

4. Make Sure There is Enough Seating For Everybody.
Yes, I actually went to a wedding reception as a guest where people had to sit on the floor, or stand and juggle their plate of food, fork and beverage. Some had to do that while managing their children. Not fun. The result?  Many people got tired of standing and left early.

5. Greet Your Guests Personally.
Take time at the reception to go to every table to say "Hi" and thank each person for coming. Making your guests feel valued is important. Don't get stuck talking to long to one person. Just a quick "Thanks for coming" is all that needed. It may not be the funnest part of the day for you, but it will be for some of your guests.

6. Have the Right Number of Guests for the Size of Your Venue.
When people are crammed together it very uncomfortable for them, but conversely, if the room is too large nobody will want to dance. When your venue tells you the correct number of people for the room, believe them.

7. Have a Plan for The Kids.
It's perfectly acceptable to have an adults only wedding, but if children are invited to the reception have activities at their table for them to do. Coloring, crafts, whatever you think they'd like. Some brides even hire a baby sitter to sit at the table and keep an eye on them. Some venues have a little room nearby where they can go and have games and movies for them. The parents and their children will all have a great time!

1. How do your couples choose the songs they want played?
     This is one of the most frequent questions we get asked by potential clients. Here is how you build a killer playlist. If you haven’t printed your RSVP cards yet, you can have the printer put on the back of the RSVP card the following:

Please, name 3 songs you will ABSOLUTELY dance to on our wedding day:
______________________________________
______________________________________
______________________________________

Now, if you have already printed them, that’s fine – just print up a few pages of the above, cut them out and include them in the RSVP envelope. The best way to guarantee that the dance floor will be packed all night is to ask your guests what makes them really JAM...and then play that music.

2. Is there an advantage to having more than one DJ at a wedding?
     The number of DJs (personnel) that you hire depends on how much work needs to be done. For example: If your needs are simple, such as a four hour event that requires setting up in one room only, then one DJ should suffice.  In my experience, it is always best to have an assistant, if not another DJ, to help with all of the set up and running around at bigger events so that your DJ can focus on the more important details at a function. The trick is to know what you are getting/paying for, so, while meeting with your potential entertainment directors and giving them all the details, you need to ask how much personnel will be at your event.  The important thing is to make sure that your DJ is also a skilled MC or Master of Ceremonies.

 3. What do you do if a guest requests a song that the bride and groom have placed on their "do not play" list?
     This should be an easy one - A "professional" entertainer will honor your "Do Not Play" list.  Whatever the reasons, it is NOT acceptable  to go against the client's wishes - pure and simple. If a guest requests a song on the Do NOT Play list, I smile and tell them I'm not allowed to play that song. Most people understand that and are okay with that explanation.

4. What is the most important thing a DJ does at a wedding?
     Here is an interesting question.  Professionals in this field do so much at events that no one ever really sees. Personally, I think that the most important thing a Wedding Entertainment Director can do is honor the bride and groom and their guests by forming a partnership with their client - working closely with them to ensure their wishes are respected so that they don't have to worry or have any undue stress on their most special day. My commitment to each client is that they and their attendees will have the best experience they've ever had anywhere. One of my favorite quotes is "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, it is a habit."  In order to be excellent, you must practice excellence.

5. What do you do if nobody is dancing?
     This is one of the most difficult questions to answer because if you are "just a DJ" then you only have one tool in your arsenal...the music. If the entertainer follows the process outlined in the answer of question #1, then this should not be a problem. This is where a true entertainer comes in. One who can get out on the floor and become a party motivator by interacting with the guests. Whether it is by leading a line dance or engaging with individuals to energize them, a professional entertainer will become part of the event and make it unforgettable. I am fond of saying "If the DJ isn't having any fun, then no one is having fun!"  If an entertainer is not willing to get out there and party with the crowd, all they can do is play another song and hope that people will dance. 6. During a sit down served wedding, do you encourage people to dance while the food is being served?
     What happens during dinner is up to the client. If it does not interfere with the service, then you really can't stop guests from dancing to their favorite slow song. If dinner is running a bit behind, opening the dance floor up for some slow dancing might actually benefit everyone involved. Ultimately, it requires communication with the client and the venue to make sure that it does not impede the serving of the food.

7. What would you do if one of the guests want to sing during the reception?
     Again, this is done at the discretion of the client. Sometimes the bride and groom are okay with guests doing a little karaoke, sometimes not. Giving the microphone to a random guest to sing without first checking with the client is risky. What if they want to sing a song that might be embarrassing to the client? What if they can't sing? This is a question that should be addressed in the initial meeting with the client. If it is okay with the client, then it's okay with me. Otherwise, I'm not handing my mic to anyone.

8. Are there any songs you think should not be played at a wedding?
     Generally, at a wedding, songs that are more about the "party life," a promiscuous lifestyle, and that contain profanity or suggestive language might be viewed as inappropriate. While the "Anaconda" song may be popular on the radio or in the club, it may be out of line if the listeners include your grandparents and younger nieces and nephews.  As a professional, I've actually had to contact clients to ask them about some of their song selections to make sure that is what they wanted. In a lot of cases the bride and groom pick a song because it has a good beat or catchy hook and don't even realize the song is about cheating on your spouse, running about trying to get "lucky," or so full of profanity that the content can't even be edited. Not passing judgments, just saying that, as a DJ, I have to consider all of the guests at an event, especially a wedding. Remember, your DJ is a reflection of you, the client. A good DJ will want to represent you in the best light possible and not play music that might be considered offensive.

9. Whew! You really do more than people realize. Besides the music, dancing, MC'ing, and monitoring the flow of the night, is there anything else a DJ can add to the event?
     Lighting plays a dramatic role in mood and atmosphere at your event. We can offer different or customized lighting packages to add to your upcoming event. We can up-light or color wash your walls and ceiling, monogram your dance floor or wall, add dance-effect lighting to create movement, or color to make the dance floor more appealing. As far as which color is more popular...that depends on the client. The most requested seems to be purple and hot pink or variations of those colors for some reason.

10. What is your best tip on making sure the guests are having a good time?
     This one is my favorite question. And the answer is...Hire the best entertainer you can find! Here are some facts you need to consider. Though many clients say that, next to their venue, entertainment is the most important aspect of their wedding, they will often pass up on a great choice for their DJ because of price.

 Remember, just because you get a bargain, doesn't mean you got a good deal.

The Knot, one of the premier bridal magazines in the world, published a survey wherein they asked brides that had registered with them a question Pre and Post wedding. The question? "What do you think is the most important priority for your wedding day?" The "post wedding answer" may surprise you. The standard is that only 5% of a wedding budget is allotted for the entertainment, but, the truth is that the entertainment is the most remembered aspect of an event and the benchmark by which the event is judged. Here are the results of the survey.

Hire a competent, professional entertainer with verifiable reviews from recent clients. Don't use an iPod, and don't have a friend DJ your wedding, unless he is a professional DJ/MC. And, please,  don't hire a DJ just because they can give you a "better price" than one of their competitors. Why? Well, would you rather be in the 98% or the 2%? I would rather you remember your wedding day as one of the most spectacular and amazing days of your life!

2. Avoid Your Up-do Looking "Up-tight."  Why spend a lot of money and hours of time on your wedding day on an up-do, that's beautiful in the back, but really looks the same as having your hair in a pony-tail from the front? Leave some looser strands on the sides and/or top. Beware though, if the only loose stands are your bangs you will be fighting your hair all day long so your eyes will be seen. If you can afford it, do a practice run with your hair dresser and see how your hair will look to the camera.

3. Avoid  Bra Indentations with Your Strapless Gown. It's just a fact of life that when you take your bra off the marks from the straps remain for a while. To avoid this wear your strapless bra while you are getting your hair and make-up done. Or, if you are lucky enough to get away without it, all the better!  Being comfortable is always the way to go.

4. Hire a Photographer with a Lighting Assistant to Get Romantic Back-Lighting.
   With radio controlled lighting, we can turn the external light on or off right from the camera, and get beautiful lighting effects to make your photos stand out! We always bring two photographers to be able to provide these effects. Bonus tip - Keep your veil on until after the first dance if you want the beautiful light popping though it as seen here.

5. Avoid "Light Shows" that Aim Lasers at People. A beautiful reception can suddenly look like a pending mass assassination when the DJ turns on his lights.  Tell your DJ to aim his lights at the ceiling.

6. Get a Good Nights Sleep Before the Wedding. It's especially hard when you're sharing a hotel room with your bridesmaids, but make it a priority. If you feel tired, you look tired.

7. Wear Comfortable Shoes. It's really sad when the bride looks stunning, but cuts the photography short because she's in too much pain. I've had that happen after the first shot with one bride. This is your day to enjoy, you don't want your main memory to be how much your feet hurt.

8. Schedule Down Time into The Day. Running around from one thing to another is stressful. Days that are scheduled too tightly usually result in frustration. Plan everything to take much longer then you think it will. We sit down with our couples the first time we meet them and go over the timeline of the day. Most of our couple don't have a wedding planner, so we're happy to use our experience of how long things really take to help you plan your day. Everybody wants the fun candid images of their day. That only happens when you have time to have fun!

9. Schedule a "First Look" or "Reveal" and Do Your Formal Photos Before the Wedding Ceremony. Of course if your heart is set on him seeing you walk down the aisle for the first time that day, then do it. But couples who break with tradition and do the photos first have a much better flow to their day. He still sees you for that first time, but then you have a couple  hours to get fun, relaxed, romantic photos. You don't have to feel rushed because a room full of people are waiting for you. Plus, you just got your hair and make-up done and haven't had time to start sweating or have people kiss you and mess it up.

10. Assign an Assistant to Help Gather the People You Want During the Formal Family Session. This should be somebody who knows you family, but not one of your bridesmaids and not your mother. The bridesmaid has to be in the pictures herself, the the mother's are hosting and have their own duties. A cousin is a great choice for this task. Give her a list of your family members that will be in the pictures and she can make sure they are "on deck" when it's time. Keeping the photo sessions moving quickly and smoothly will give you free time to have a private moment together after saying your vowels and before being bombarded with congratulations at the reception. Remember if you want photos of romantic private moments, you have to build time into the schedule to allow them to happen. When you are relaxed and having fun it shows in your pictures. This will result in beautiful wedding photography.
